What is a single-pole light switch?

A single-pole switch controls one light or fixture from a single location. It’s the most common switch type used in homes.

What is a 3-way light switch?

A 3-way switch allows you to control the same light from two different locations — ideal for hallways, staircases, and large rooms.

What does “gang” mean in light switches?

“Gang” refers to how many switches are installed under one wall plate:

• 1-gang: one switch
• 2-gang: two switches
• 3-gang: three switches, etc.

What is the difference between a standard toggle and a retractive toggle?

A standard toggle stays in place when turned on or off and directly controls the electrical load.

A retractive toggle (momentary toggle) springs back to centre after being pressed. It sends a momentary signal to a compatible multi-location dimmer or control module rather than switching the load itself.

Standard toggles are used for everyday switching. Retractive toggles are used for multi-location dimming and advanced control systems.

Are all light switches compatible with LED fixtures?

Most modern switches work with LED fixtures, but compatibility depends on the wiring and switch type. Always check the product specifications if you’re upgrading from older switches.
